Plein Air to Prepare - Artists
Workshop Descriptions
Chelsea Bork
New to plein air? Looking to get started? Not sure where to start or what supplies? Maybe you need a little help translating that beautiful scene to your painting? In this one-hour demonstration, I will give helpful tips I have learned along the way, what supplies work best for me for transporting, site selection, creating an effective composition, underpaintings, and color application.
For my class you will need a few pencils, an eraser and a sketchbook! Together we will navigate packing for movement, site selection, compositional thumbnail sketches, how to black in and color application. Let's prepare to plein air!
Deborah Maklowski
Deborah creates both representational and abstract works in a variety of media, but her first love is the landscape, and she has over 20 years’ experience as a plein air painter. Deborah will demonstrate her plein air process in soft pastel, starting with a thumbnail sketch and a line drawing on the pastel paper, followed by a hard pastel underpainting that is washed in with fast-drying isopropyl alcohol and then lively, intuitive mark-making with soft pastel. For anyone interested, Deborah will also provide a list of her plein air equipment and supplies.
Katherine Wah
Katherine Wah continues to study drawing, mixed media, and watercolor at Howard County Arts Council from 2019. She is a former special educator whose art focuses on past and present experiences and is influenced by nature. She communicates ideas while experimenting with process and searching for ways images can draw attention or interpret social issues.
Amanda Milliner
Amanda is a Maryland based, professional oil painter that competes in regional plein air events as well as national art competitions for the American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America. In her work, she describes everyday scenes with her own impressions of color and light. Amanda will be demonstrating the use of a notan drawing to compose the lights and darks of her subject and translate the design using an alla prima painting technique.
Jon Schubbe
Jon Schubbe is an up and coming fine artist based in Baltimore, MD. With a history in digital art and animation, he started using more traditional methods in the past few years including oil painting. He loves to paint plein air and portrait, and loves to lindy hop swing dance. Jon will focus on design in the demo, which helps ensure great aesthetic quality with less detail.
Cindy Rivarde
Cindy is a working artist in Columbia, Maryland who focuses on landscape and figurative painting with a strong sense of color. For this demonstration, she will be working with oil paint, and will show how to set up a compositional layout and build up details. Please feel free to bring your materials to paint along.
